John D. Lowell ’75
John D. Lowell ’75 passed away March 9 at home surrounded by family. John was born in Bridgton, Maine, in 1953 to Walter and Janice Lowell. The youngest of three boys, John attended Gould Academy, where he joined the ski team and developed a passion for ski jumping, which led him to Dartmouth. There he studied geology while refining his skills on the ski hill, ultimately competing as one of the nation’s top NCAA ski jumpers. He purchased and operated the Highlander Motel in Bridgton after graduating from college and later managed the Castle in the Clouds estate in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. At one point he and his wife, Carrie, became part owners of the Mount Washington Cruise ship. He even went so far as to get his commercial captains license so he could captain the 230-foot vessel. John spent the latter part of his career in the ski industry, working at resorts throughout New England, including Waterville Valley, Mount Snow, Attitash, and Wildcat. He retired as the general manager of Attitash and Wildcat, which he described as “his dream job.” After retirement John got to work restoring his antique wooden ski boat, and he enjoyed cruising Squam Lake, New Hampshire, in his 1963 Century Resorter with Carrie and his dog Tilley.
