Alan Thorndike ’68
Alan Thorndike ’68 died unexpectedly at home in Stowe, Vermont, November 25, 2024. He was born on March 14, 1946, in New York City and grew up in Westport, Connecticut, on Long Island Sound. Attending Deerfield Academy, Alan played varsity lacrosse and was accepted at Dartmouth, where he majored in English and was a member of Psi Upsilon and Sphinx. Alan then moved to Stowe and in 1970 graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard officer candidate school, serving as a lieutenant in the North Atlantic. Upon his return home, he worked for Dartmouth admissions while the first coeducational class was selected. Subsequently, he moved to Maine to attend law school, made law review, and met and married Ellen Eddy, with whom he spent the next 50 years. In 1980 Alan began his long law practice career in Stowe, where he loved being a small-town lawyer and would often cross-country ski to meet his clients. Alan was passionate about his community, giving back as president of Stowe Rotary; founder of the Stowe Education Fund; and president, board chair, and executive director of the Stowe Land Trust. With a passion for children and youth sports, he installed an outdoor ice hockey rink and other facilities for his boys and their friends and recently cheered the grandchildren at their games and ski races. Al is survived by Ellen, sons Porter and Ted, and two grandchildren.
