Charles F. Clark Jr. ’67 passed away peacefully on September 22, 2024, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. “Fred” came to the College from Lancaster, Ohio, majored in physics, was a brother of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and was active in intramural athletics. Fred married his high school sweetheart, Anne Richards, on August 21, 1965, and after graduation entered the Ohio State University, where he earned an M.S. and a Ph.D. in physics, specializing in cryogenics. He spent his career as a physicist solving problems using materials with unusual physical properties. Fred developed a passion for youth softball, first by coaching his daughters’ teams, then establishing what is now the Upper Arlington (Ohio) Softball Association, which provides free pitching lessons on Sunday afternoons year-round, winter indoor softball, and open hitting clinics. In 2007 the Upper Arlington High School softball field was named Fred Clark Field in his honor. Fred is survived by his wife, Anne; daughters Karen and Kim; siblings Dick and Molly; grandchildren Jacob, Zachary, Nathan, Taylor, and A.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
