James A. Mechenbier ’65

James A. Mechenbier ’65, M.D., died on February 10 in Columbus, Ohio, following an extended illness. He came to Dartmouth from Dayton, Ohio, and was a premed biology major, member of Theta Delta Chi, and played rugby. Jim received his M.D. from Ohio State and practiced in Dayton as an otolaryngologist. Throughout his life he remained active in sports, raised a family, grew a medical practice, made friends, and for many years continued playing rugby, softball, soccer, and running marathons with best friend Howard Petricoff. He was tagged with unique names: A high school sports columnist in Dayton called him “Bull Moose” noting his strength in football; to teammates, he was “Doc”; to siblings Ed, Tom, Jan, Mary Lou, Gail, Lora, and Chaz he was “Jimmy” and “Jimbo.” He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; children Kim, Andy, and Tami; and grandchildren Caden, Grayson, and Kwynn.
