Hilary Chi-Hsi Chan ’76

Hilary Chi-Hsi Chan ’76 died in Seattle on September 22, 2024. He was born on September 27, 1953, to Joseph and Helena Chan in Hong Kong. Hilary spent his childhood years in Taiwan before immigrating to the United States with his family in 1970. He was a lifelong (and eclectic) learner. He studied mathematics at Dartmouth, where he was a rock climber and member of the International Student Association. He studied sculpture at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Central Asian studies at the University of Washington. He surprised and delighted those around him by speaking in the various languages he picked up and learned throughout his worldwide travels. His deep love for the arts spanned multiple disciplines, including sketching, sculpting, pottery, and dancing. He worked as a computer programmer. In recent years Hilary referred to himself as a “cancer guinea pig” because he participated in multiple clinical trials for cancer medications, driven by his desire to contribute to future advancements in treatment. Hilary is survived by his mother, Helena; siblings Evelyn, Susan, and Wayne; brother-in-law Dean; sister-in-law Pam; nephew Egan; and niece Katie.
