Malcolm D. Clarke Jr. ’57

Malcolm D. Clarke Jr. ’57 passed away unexpectedly September 8, 2024, during a weekend cruise on his yacht, Aleria. He graduated from Bronxville (New York) Schools. At Dartmouth he majored in economics and was in the yacht club four years (treasurer, captain). After college he served two years in the U.S. Coast Guard, where he became proficient in the use of a sextant for celestial navigation. In 1959 he began a long and successful career in investment management at Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, & Smith, commuting daily to New York City. His childhood nickname “Doc,” originally derived from his initials M.D., evolved to being widely respected as a doctor of money. In 1968 he and his wife, Kathy, took a sabbatical and completed a surface circumnavigation of the globe, driving across country, traversing Australia in a Volkswagen van, and completing other legs on various ships. Once back, he resumed his career at Brundage, Story & Rose. Rising through the ranks he became a managing partner, eventually overseeing its acquisition by Bessemer Trust. He was a member of the America Yacht Club for more than 50 years, serving as commodore from 1989 to 1990. In 2010 he purchased a 1958 42-foot Bunker & Ellis lobster yacht, oversaw restoration of this classic design, and named her Aleria. He happily cruised in Maine and Rhode Island waters. Doc was a many-year alumni fund volunteer. He is survived by Karen, his partner of nearly 20 years.
