William L. Bradshaw Jr. ’57

William L. Bradshaw Jr. ’57 died on September 1, 2024. Brad graduated from University High School in Columbia, Missouri. He initially attended University of Missouri, then transferred to Dartmouth, where he majored in economics. He was in the Dartmouth Players, the Young Democrats, the Human Rights Society, and Army ROTC. He went on to Indiana University in Bloomington, where he earned an M.B.A. in transportation. He served five years in the Army Reserves with six months active duty in Fort Bliss, Texas. In 1965 Brad was hired by the Southern Pacific Railroad, a career-defining move that brought him to San Francisco. He never showed up for work in anything less than a plaid button-down with slacks. Brad loved trains and had train magazines and freight engine pictures strewn across his house. He couldn’t drive by a train without counting its cars. His job was as a cost analyst, and he knew everything about rail lines. A mid-career highlight was a rail tour of Europe—10 countries in 21 days—that he would enthusiastically describe to anyone who would listen. Brad played tennis at the Chabot Canyon Racquet Club in Oakland, California, and subscribed to the San Francisco Chronicle for more than 50 years. Brad was known for being late at almost every function, but his charm and witticisms won people over. He is survived by son Andy and daughter Carrie. His wife, Judy, predeceased him.
