Herbert J. Hillman Jr. ’54
Herbert J. Hillman Jr. ’54 of Stowe, Vermont, and Hanover, died peacefully on September 8, 2024, one day before his 92nd birthday. Born on September 9, 1932, in Paterson, New Jersey, to Herbert and Mabel Hillman. Herb attended Lawrenceville Academy and Dartmouth, where he majored in economics, was a brother in Delta Tau Delta, and involved in Green Book and baseball. He earned his M.B.A. at New York University Graduate School of Business. Herb married Dorothy Ann Phillips Hillman. After graduation he joined the family business, Country Club Ice Cream, in Paterson, New Jersey. Drawn to northern New England, he and Ann bought the Golden Eagle Motel that same year. It was a true family business, with all four children and grandchildren working there through the years. Herb eventually partnered with his son-in-law, Neil Van Dyke, and they expanded the resort to more than 95 units on 65 beautiful acres. Many happy guests would return year after year. Herb was a mentor and friend to his devoted, long-term staff. His service to Dartmouth was the endless work he did for the class of ’54 at all occasions. Prior to his death he was class vice president and on the planning committee for its 70th reunion. Herb was predeceased by his parents, brother John, and Ann. He is survived by children Carol, Barbara, Mary, and James and their spouses as well as 12 grandchildren.
