Herbert Leonard Gildan ’54

Herbert Leonard Gildan ’54 passed away on September 8, 2024, in North Palm Beach, Florida. He excelled academically at Lawrence High School and Dartmouth, where he was a member of Foley House. He never forgot Dartmouth and served the College and class as alumni interviewer, Alumni Fund and class agent, and as an officer in regional clubs. He went on to Harvard to earn his LL.B. and J.D. Herb’s lucky break came in the summer of 1954, when he met Kate Yeager; they married in 1955 and shared 69 happy years together. Herb moved with Kate and daughter Nancy to West Palm Beach. Soon after son Phillip was born, and in 1959 the family moved to North Palm Beach. Herb was a leading figure in the Palm Beach County legal community, where his legal expertise in utility law led to formation of Seacoast Utilities. Herb and Kate loved to travel. His greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren. whether ski racing down the Little Kate run at Deer Valley, challenging them in golf and croquet, watching them row crew on the Charles River, cheering their baseball games and other athletic pursuits, or attending their graduations. Herb is survived by Kate; Nancy and son-in-law Gary Smith; son Phillip and daughter-in-law Laurie; and seven granddaughters and grandsons.
