John Paul “Dabbo” Dabney ’54
John Paul “Dabbo” Dabney ’54 died in August 2024, as reported by the Northern California Bluegrass Society on August 20, 2024. Dabbo came to Dartmouth from New York City and the Haverford School. At Dartmouth he was a member of Chi Phi and the Dartmouth Christian Union. After graduating with a degree in sociology, Dabbo went on to earn a master’s in social work at Columbia University. Moving to San Carlos, California, his entire career was with San Mateo County as a social worker with people with mental illnesses and counseling children and families. He also developed a program to assess seniors with depression and dementia. His wife, Jane, a social worker and computer programmer, predeceased him in 2007. An adventurous couple without children, they traveled the world in their retirement. Dabbo was an ardent member of the Northern California Bluegrass Society, providing financial and moral support throughout his life, and a strong supporter of the arts in and near San Carlos. He enjoyed all musical genres—especially bluegrass, traditional jazz, rado, and rebetika—and rock and minerals collecting. He also found time to serve the College as an Alumni Fund volunteer.
