Andrew L. Petersen ’58

Andrew L. Petersen ’58, Tu’59, died on March 10. Andy was born in Boston, grew up in Wellesley Hills, majored in economics and was a brother at Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He completed an M.B.A. as part of the Dartmouth-Tuck 3-2 program and then served four years as a supply officer in the U.S. Navy. Andy worked as assistant professor at Bentley College and as a certified public accountant for various accounting firms in Boston. Later he applied his accounting skills to the fields of forestry management and summer camp operations, with financial management positions at Tree Growers Inc., Aloha Foundation, and Wagner Forest Management Ltd. He once wrote, “I am committed to responsible forestry, but I am not a tree-hugger. I believe Mother Nature does a fine job, but she can use a little help making our forests more productive. You’ve got to weed the garden.” Andy rebuilt a 150-year-old house in West Fairlee, Vermont, where he raised pigs, chickens, dogs, and cats. He and his second wife, Sharon, hiked the Appalachian Trail and made five motor home trips to Alaska. He led hiking, backpacking, and canoe trips for Elderhostel, even after a heart attack and bypass surgery in his 60s. Andy is survived by Sharon, three children, Sharon’s two children, and five grandchildren.
