Andrew L. Nichols ’58

Andrew L. Nichols ’58 passed away on October 20, 2023, in Lexington, Massachusetts. Andy grew up in Wellesley, Massachusetts. At Dartmouth he majored in economics, played in the Marching Band, served as comptroller of WDBS, and was a brother at Sigma Phi Epsilon. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and went on to earn a law degree at Harvard in 1961. A long-time law partner at Choate, Hall & Stewart, his corporate practice focused on Boston-based tech firms. He was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hiking and white-water canoeing throughout New England, the Rockies, and the United Kingdom. With his wife and two children, he climbed all 46 of New Hampshire’s then-recognized 4,000-footers. He played trombone for many years in the Concord Band and in a jazz big-band ensemble in Medford, Massachusetts. He volunteered for the Appalachian Mountain Club, serving as its president in 1977-78, and led the Appalachian Trail Conference. He was a trustee of the Winchester (Massachusetts) Public Library and the Winchester Savings Bank and a chair of the Winchester high school building committee. His motto was, “Nothing is as good or bad as it first appears.” Andy had several Dartmouth family members. His father, Dick Nichols, was a member of the class of 1926. Andy is survived by his wife, Roslyn, brother Jim ’60, daughter Stephanie ’63, a son, and three grandchildren.
