David C. Glendinning ’58

David C. Glendinning ’58 passed away on September 25, 2023, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, and attended Phillips Academy. An English major at Dartmouth, Dave was active with the DOC, Tri-Kap, and the freshman swim team. After receiving a master’s of divinity at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge in 1961, he was ordained as an Episcopal priest. He led parishes in Southwest Harbor, Maine, and Concord, New Hampshire; served as chaplain at Colby College in Waterville, Maine; and was devoted to his parishioners and the work of the church. David was an avid sailor and was often out bird hunting or skiing at Saddleback Mountain. He was proud of his 12-year run as an actor and set designer for the Portland Stage Company’s annual production of The Christmas Carol. David retired in Freeport, Maine, and then Burlington, Vermont. For his 50th reunion book, he wrote: “I have discovered that there are bedrock principles to which I am returning. Two among many others: No one should kill another human being, and no one should profit from the hurtful exploitation of others.” David’s wife predeceased him; his family includes many Dartmouth alums—his father and two uncles (deceased), plus daughters Deborah ’83 and Jennifer ’83 and son Matt ’87.
