Joel S. Mitchell Jr. ’57

Joel S. Mitchell Jr. ’57 passed away on March 24. Joel came to Dartmouth from Deerfield Academy. He majored in geography and was active in Sigma Chi (rush chairman), Dragon, Le Cercle Français, and ROTC. After several years in the Army, Joel worked in New York City for Colgate-Palmolive Co. for three years and then Standard Brands for 11 years. He said, “The tough knocks of the (military) service and grassroots experience in the consumer packaged-goods industry were good tonic for me.” After a few years testing several entrepreneurial options, he landed in a partnership at Goldmacher/Mitchell Communications, a firm specializing in audio, visual, and print training programs for levels of business management. Later on, he was a business consultant. Joel lived in Manhattan for many years. In 1979 he and his wife moved to Rye Brook, New York, near his boyhood home. He was a longstanding member of the University Club in New York City and a huge fan of the New York Yankees. He was an avid racquet ball player and long-distance cyclist. He was also a dedicated volunteer in Westchester County at SUNY Community College, Meals on Wheels, and in cat rescue work. Joel’s wife Dorothy “Dee Dee,” predeceased him. He is survived by his sister, Ruth, and numerous nieces and nephews.
