Richard C. Handy ’57

Richard C. Handy ’57 passed away peacefully on July 6 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine. Dick came to Dartmouth from Mount Hermon School. He majored in English and belonged to Tri-Kap. Dick married Barbara while in college and they lived at Wigwam. He began a 36-year career with Prudential Insurance Co. in Boston in 1957 as an underwriter, then transferred to personnel (now human resources), where he found his true calling. Dick was a people person who chose to relegate paperwork to evenings so that he could spend time talking and listening to colleagues and employees during the day. He advanced through the ranks in personnel with increasing responsibilities. Dick belonged to the Personnel Directors Association of New England Life Insurance Cos. He retired as regional vice president in 1992. His career at one company is a tribute to his ability to work with many changes in management. When his children were growing up, the family spent time camping in Maine and exploring Cape Cod, Massachusetts, beaches. His hobbies were playing golf, gardening, and woodworking. In 1984 he and his wife purchased land on the shores of Maine’s Sebec Lake, with mountains, pine trees, moose, foxes, loons, and plentiful fish. His children and grandchildren attribute their love of nature to this special place and will forever associate it with his memory. Dick is survived by Barbara, his wife of 69 years; daughters Christine, Donna, and Susan; son Phillip; and many grandchildren.
