Richard Eldred Hull ’52

Richard Eldred Hull ’52 died on March 22 at home in Potomac, Maryland. Born in Paris, France, in 1931, Richard came to the United States following the war. He completed high school at the Stuyvesant School in Warrenton, Virginia, and while at Dartmouth received a degree in French civilization from the University of Paris in 1951. After graduating Dartmouth he enrolled in Harvard Law School, graduating in 1956. Richard became an attorney and career civil servant, starting as a U.S. naval officer within the office of the judge advocate general. He went on to serve in the U.S. Department of the Treasury; followed by 13 years in the U.S. Department of Commerce, rising to the position of acting deputy general counsel; and then served as general counsel of the Federal Maritime Commission. Richard later entered private legal practice, specializing in international trade, before serving as the operating committee chairman of the U.S. Department of Commerce Export Administration. He finished his career at the Institute for National Strategic Studies. Richard was first married in 1962 to Sigrid L. Westfall. Following a divorce in 1968, he soon married Angela Velasquez. His second marriage ended in 1981. In 1986 Richard married Margarida Kendall, who survives him with stepson Michael; sons George, Stephen, and Miguel; daughter Aline; and nine grandchildren.
