Thomas Vosteen ’66

Thomas Vosteen ’66 passed away peacefully with family by his side on May 30. A graduate of Medina (New York) High School, at Dartmouth he was in the Glee Club and Marching Band while earning his bachelor’s in French. Tom went on to collect a master’s in French from Middlebury College, a master’s in French and education from the University of Iowa, and a Ph.D. in French from the University of Iowa. A lifelong educator, Tom taught French with passion and humor, retiring as a professor from Eastern Michigan University. His students undoubtedly left his classes knowing French and, more importantly, knowing how to laugh at life. He also served as an interpreter in the U.S. Department of State international visitor program and translated two books by Rene Daumal from French into English. In 1990 Tom married Michele Favre in Iowa City, Iowa, and they made their home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, before settling back in Iowa City after retirement. Tom loved to laugh and share joy. He was quoted in his later years saying, “Being alive is about loving people. Without love, what do you have?” Tom is survived by his wife, Michele; stepdaughter Sandrine; grandchildren Jackson, Katherine, and Sophie; and other family and friends.
