Mary J. Schneider ’76

Mary J. Schneider ’76 died of ALS on March 14 in Hanover. Schneider, a clinical psychologist, completed her college work at Dartmouth in its first class to admit women and her Ph.D. at the University of Vermont. She became one of the founding partners of Deer Creek Psychological Associates in West Lebanon, New Hampshire. She worked with adults and older adolescents, especially as they transitioned to adulthood. Areas of expertise included anxiety disorders, depression, self-acceptance, self-discovery, grief, loss, relationship difficulties, and effective parenting. Mary loved the outdoors and for years engaged in kayaking, hiking, bicycling, skiing, and sailing (the latter three especially with her husband, John); she also liked cooking, gardening, reading, and listening to music. She was curious about the universe, our world and life within and upon it, and humanity and its history; she loved her dog Johnnie. Mary is survived by her father, Edward; siblings Ed, Dave, Ellen, and Tim and their spouses and significant others and children; and John’s children, Ben, Beth, and Ellen and their children. She was predeceased by John and her mother, Eunice.
