George Guilford Shaw ’54

George Guilford Shaw ’54 passed away February 21 in Denver. George came to Dartmouth from Dayton, Ohio, and the Canterbury School, where he was class vice president and a versatile athlete on the football and hockey teams as well as the track team, of which he was captain. At Dartmouth George majored in architecture, played football and lacrosse, participated in Army ROTC, and was a member of Kappa Sigma and Dragon. Following Dartmouth he was stationed with the U.S. Army in Korea. George started his building career in Phoenix before moving to Denver, where he founded Shaw Construction Co. in 1961 and met and married Carole Lee Wolfe in 1970. The company grew and prospered, first through projects in Aspen, Vail, Telluride, and Grand Junction and then in Wyoming and Utah. George was an expert pilot and loved sailing, heli-skiing, playing golf, squash, and hockey into his 80s. His philanthropic activities included volunteering for the Catholic Archdiocese of Denver, Angel Flights, the National Outdoor Leadership School, and Dartmouth and support for Lalmba, which provides food, medicine, and education for orphaned children in Eritrea and Ethiopia. George is survived by Carole, brother John, son George, daughter Holly, and grandsons Jack, Charlie, and Luke.
