Winifred “Winky” Clarke Stearns Hussey ’82

Winifred “Winky” Clarke Stearns Hussey ’82, a third-generation Dartmouth graduate, died unexpectedly of cardiac arrest on October 9, 2023, while biking with friends in Slovenia. Winky was born August 8, 1960, and grew up in Manhattan and Switzerland. She attended the Brearley School, excelling academically and playing volleyball. At Dartmouth Winky participated in the ’82 “group rush” of Alpha Theta that coeducated it, ran the winter sports program, and graduated magna cum laude with a major in education. Winky then taught in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and San Francisco, where she reconnected with Peter Hussey ’83, rectifying a star-crossed college blind date. After Peter’s M.B.A. at Harvard they wed; son Luke ’11 was born; and they moved to Seattle. Son Duncan and daughter Clarkie followed. All four survive her. Winky became a chef par excellence and was a constant reader and word game aficionada, half- marathoner (14!), community environmentalist, homeless cooking program linchpin, board member of the Seattle Repertory Theater, and philanthropist. Freshman roommate Diane Bassett ’82 said, “Winky exuded warmth and love for all she encountered, connecting the world one relationship at a time.” Phoebe Chandler Turner ’82 added, “Winky’s warmth, usually involving an enveloping hug, reached far and wide. She created community wherever she went, lived and loved fully, abided no fools, and had an unstoppable passion for learning, meaning, laughter, music, and friendships. She always sought the most interesting places, lectures, and concerts to experience. Those she touched are left with an indestructible memory of her authenticity and smile, oh that smile.”
