Victor C. Otley Jr. ’57

Victor C. Otley Jr. ’57 passed away on November 14, 2023. Vic graduated from Upper Montclair (New Jersey) High School. He majored in history and went on to earn a law degree at Rutgers School of Law. He spent a career of 40 years at the law firm of Williams, Caliri, Miller, Otley, and Horn in Wayne, New Jersey. The practice involved business, banking, insurance, development, and education law. Vic was widely viewed as an extremely capable problem solver. He represented many clients who trusted him throughout the length of his long career. Active locally, Vic served as president of several banks and helped many community organizations, including the Wayne board of education, Pine Lakes Association, Preakness Pool, and Group Home for Adults. Vic enjoyed many sports, including tackling the ski bumps at Mad River Glen (Waitsfield, Vermont), biking the rural roadways of New Jersey, and playing handball. Family vacations included bicycling through Nova Scotia and a canoe trip down the Allagash in Maine. After retirement Vic and his wife of 64 years, Gloria, whom he met on a trans-Atlantic journey, toured the world and hiked the lofty mountains of Europe, the Himalayas, East Asia, and South America. They settled into a life of active retirement in Dataw Island, South Carolina, for 20 years, regularly playing golf and tennis and boating. They spent summers with family on Panther Pond in Maine. Gloria survives Vic along with sons Victor, Clark, and Brian ’89, and 11 grandchildren.
