G. William Fiero Jr. ’57

G. William Fiero Jr. ’57 of Lakewood, Colorado, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 1. Bill graduated from Port Chester (New York) High School. He majored in earth sciences/geology and was in Delta Upsilon. An avid outdoorsman, he participated in the DOC, Cabin & Trail (director), Bait & Bullet (president), and Ledyard Canoe Club. He earned his M.S. in geology at the University of Wyoming. Bill became a petroleum geologist for Texaco with extensive fieldwork exploring for oil in New Mexico and Texas. Tiring of the corporate life, he went back to academia to earn his Ph.D. in geology at the University of Wisconsin. Bill joined the faculty at the University of Las Vegas (UNLV), where he eventually was made full professor of geology. He became a sought-after teacher, researcher, and writer in geology. Through the continuing education program at UNLV, he took people on many geology-related trips locally and internationally. While working he loved to be outdoors, camping, hiking, and backpacking with his family on weekends and summers. After retiring in 1986 Bill and his wife, Ellen, sold their house and through hiked the Appalachian Trail. Without a house, they traveled in a sequence of “homes”—a small RV, backpack (1988), Flicka sailboat (1991-93), and a C-Dory powerboat (2000-12). They began renting a condo in Lakewood, overlooking Kendrick Lake and near family. Bill is survived by Ellen, sons Brad and Scott, daughter Kim, and several grandchildren.
