William H. Herold ’65

William H. Herold ’65, M.D., died on October 20, 2023, in Akron, Ohio. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and moved with his adoptive parents to Colorado. He came to Dartmouth from New Mexico Military Institute, spending his junior year near Innsbruck, Austria, where he developed his love of skiing. At Dartmouth he was an anthropology major and a member of Alpha Theta. He received his M.D. from University of Colorado in 1971. Bill’s residencies included the Pathology Institute in Vienna, Austria; University of California, San Diego; and University of British Columbia. He then became director of laboratories for 10 years at Oakland (California) Children’s Hospital, where son Alex was born. Bill signed up as trek doctor when he saw legendary sherpa Tenzing Norgay, Bill’s boyhood idol, would be taking his last trek to the base of Mount Everest. After a year-long fellowship at Boston Children’s, he took a position at Dalhousie Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for two years before moving to Akron (Ohio) Children’s Hospital. Bill said, “Who knew this “little” town would provide such personal and professional satisfaction”—for the remainder of his life! For more than 30 years the family lived in Akron, and he said it was a wonderful experience and the people and fun times “topped off” an already full life! Bill is survived by his wife, Sylvia, “the most gracious person in the world,” and son Alex.
