Donald P. Miller ’57

Donald P. Miller ’57 passed away on September 27, 2023. Don came to Dartmouth from Montpelier (Vermont) High School. He majored in botany and was in Gamma Delta Chi (treasurer) and Glee Club. Don admits he was “never a scholar,’ but with what he describes as “dogged determination,” completed Vermont Medical School (1962). In the early years he worked for the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. His true calling was found in Gardner, Massachusetts, where he opened what became a thriving practice in pediatric medicine. His self-described “small-town doc” approach endeared him to generations of families, leaving a lasting impression on countless children. He was affiliated with Heywood Hospital in Gardner, where he served as chief of staff as well as on the board of directors. After retiring Don continued his devotion to the community on the Gardner Board of Health and the Knowlton Foundation (education support). He was an active member of the Chair City Choir Club, Boat Club, Monomonac Sporting Club, and Lake Mansfield Trout Club in Stowe, Vermont. He enjoyed skiing, fly fishing, and tennis. He shared his beautiful voice with the Gardner Community Choir and the Theater at the Mount musical productions. Don said, “I have always remained somewhat of a ‘rube’ and a country boy at heart and return to my native state of Vermont at each opportunity.” He was predeceased by Peg, his wife of 58 years, and is survived by daughters Nancy and Susan.
