Charles McComber Best ’52
Charles McComber Best ’52 died on October 5, 2023. He was born on January 23, 1931, and prepared for college at New Kensington (Pennsylvania) High School, where he excelled academically and in sports. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1952 and the Tuck School of Business in 1952. At Dartmouth he was a member of Sigma Chi and active in the Dartmouth Outing Club. Chuck then served for two years in the U.S. Army. He met his future wife, Gertrude “Trudy” Slater, at Chautauqua Lake, New York, when they were teenagers. They were married on September 6, 1952. They settled in Dallas, where Chuck began his finance career at the First National Bank. Following that he was the head of several investment firms in Dallas. He served on the boards of many companies and nonprofits and was a most active citizen of the Dallas community. He was predeceased by his daughter, Gertrude. He is survived by Trudy; daughter Elizabeth “Betsy” and her husband, W. Bennett; daughter Dorothy “Sissy” and her husband, Allen; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
