Edward K. Isbey Jr. ’51

Edward K. Isbey Jr. ’51, M.D., widely respected as a passionate leader and mentor in the field of ophthalmology, died on August 31, 2023, in Asheville, North Carolina. At Dartmouth Ed was a running back for the football team under Coach Tuss McLaughry. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi, Dragon, and Green Key. After two years of service in the U.S. Navy he attended Wayne State University Medical School and served his residency in ophthalmology at the Kresge Eye Institute. Ed founded and, for more than 50 years, led Asheville Eye Associates. He was joined in the practice by his son, Edward III. Asheville Eye Associates operated in six locations and three satellite offices. He was also a consulting professor of ophthalmology at Duke University. A contributor to his profession, Ed was especially devoted to the American Eye Study Club, which supported young ophthalmologists from diverse backgrounds. He was a past director of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and was honored with its Achievement Award. Ed also took great delight in fly fishing, raising orchids, and vacationing at his summer home on Lake Huron, Michigan.
