George S. Bissell ’51

George S. Bissell ’51, who had a distinguished career in the financial services industry and followed the markets with enthusiasm throughout his life, died at his home in Wellesley, Massachusetts, on October 13, 2023. At Dartmouth George, also known as “Suds,” was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon and Sphinx. He earned an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School and served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps for two years. George began his career in financial services with Eaton and Howard, later moving to the Massachusetts Cos., now known as Keystone, where he served as CEO from 1977 until his retirement in 1994. He was a longtime board member of the Association of Investment Management and Research, president of the Financial Analysis Federation, and chairman of the Investment Company Institute. Among many civic involvements he was a trustee and chair of the investment committee of the Boston Medical Center. Another consuming interest was Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, Greece. He served on its board of trustees for more than 50 years and as its chairman for 15 years. He cultivated deep and lasting friendships in Greece. He was committed to providing educational opportunity for others; major involvements were at Hiram College in Ohio (which all four of his grandparents attended) and the MacDuffie School in Massachusetts, both of which recognized him with outstanding service awards. He loved curling, golf, and Cape Cod and had a second home in East Orleans, Massachusetts.
