Stephan R. Swirsky ’63

Stephan R. Swirsky ’63 died on August 7 of rapid-onset systemic infection. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and attended James Hillhouse High School. Steve was a star athlete in basketball and baseball from early childhood. He played on the Babe Ruth Little League All-Star team in Oregon, facing future All Stars Mickey Lolich and Al Downing. In high school basketball Steve was All-Connecticut, All-New England, and on the team that won, in a huge upset, the coveted New England Championship, for which he was named Most Valuable Player. Dartmouth basketball coach Doggie Julian attended that game and suggested to Steve that he apply to Dartmouth. He played basketball at Dartmouth all four years and was captain of the freshman team. Steve majored in sociology, was a member of Pi Lambda Phi (rush chair) and Sphinx. Steve was married in his freshman year and had two children before his senior year, having traded “road trips [for] home-cooked meals.” Steve was an active alumni admissions interviewer. He attended Tuck for one year before going to work in Great Neck, Long Island, where in the 1980s he founded Waterlines Inc., a manufacturers representative firm specializing in water-related products. Steve is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan; children Seth ’82, Ben, and Karen; and three grandchildren.
