Philip K. Livingston ’58

Philip K. Livingston ’58—adventurer, Marine, and lifelong aviator “forever lured by the excitement of the unknown”—died March 20 in Alaska. Phil grew up in Pittsburgh and played lacrosse all four years at Dartmouth. He majored in English and was a Sigma Nu, skier, and member of ski patrol. Phil served 10 years as a Marine Corps fighter jet pilot, starting a lifelong passion for both flying and adventure. Friend Jack Crowley ’56 said, “Phil was part of the Dartmouth ‘rat pack’ in Seattle in the late 1960s into the 1970s and beyond! He skied, played lacrosse, ice hockey, camped, raced his 30-foot sloop, and flew his F-4 Corsair in the Reno Air Races—one of a kind!” Phil’s spirit of adventure led him to Alaska to become a bush pilot, a commercial real estate broker in Anchorage, and a volunteer ski patrol member at a local resort. He was founding president of a Rotary Club and served as a district governor for Rotary International. Phil was a Dartmouth admissions interviewer for many years and twice served as secretary of his local alumni club. In Phil’s words, “As an adventurer I have had some fun. I have saved some lives, helped some kids, and started a program to give disabled veterans the opportunity to ski. My wife and I are both retired, but we still wonder what we will do when we grow up.” He is survived by his second wife, Diana; four children; two stepchildren, including Michelle Bittner ’87; and nine grandchildren.
