Charles E. Stevens ’57

Charles E. Stevens ’57 died on July 29 surrounded by family. “Zeus” graduated from Phillips Academy. Entering Dartmouth, he excelled in socializing so much so that after two years he joined the U.S. Army for a three-year stint. He was selected to study Russian at the U.S. Department of Defense Language Institute and stationed in Japan, where he intercepted and translated Russian communications. When he returned to Dartmouth, he played football and lacrosse and was a member of Theta Delta Chi and Dragon. After spending eight years in marketing at Procter & Gamble and Glendenning Corp., Zeus changed careers. He earned an M.S. in healthcare administration from Trinity University and entered the challenging field of management of rural hospitals. In mid-career he was president of Canton-Potsdam Hospital in New York. For the last 13 years of his working life he was employed by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, developing quality-of-care standards for the healthcare industry, conducting on-site performance reviews, and accrediting hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics. Upon retirement in 1999 he moved to Lake Keowee in Salem, South Carolina. Zeus loved people, looked for connections and commonalities with others, and was content to make the best of every situation, including his last five years with cancer treatments. He is survived by Peggy, his wife of 60 years, and children Amy and Charles and their families.
