Farquhar Alan Smith ’52

Farquhar Alan Smith ’52 passed away on June 2 at home in Indialantic, Florida. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on April 21, 1931, and grew up in Richmond, Virginia, where he graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. He attended Dartmouth and Tuck on a scholarship, and during the summers he served in the Navy as part of ROTC. He was a member of Sigma Chi. He spent his entire business career at General Motors and rose to become the company’s executive vice president of finance. After his retirement he stayed active in business for years, serving on the boards of three other auto-related companies. An avid road runner for much of his adult life, Alan decided at age 70 to begin competing in Masters track events and during the next two decades won many medals. He served on Florida Tech’s board of trustees, established visiting executive programs at Dartmouth and Florida Tech, and was a member of the vestry of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Melbourne, Florida. Alan was married for 30 years to his first wife, Barbara; for 10 years to his second wife, Janet; and for 22 years to his third wife, Sharon, who survives him. He is also survived by son Chris; stepsons Lee and Ian; stepdaughters Lindsey, Leslie, Kim, and Trudi; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
