Brian L. Buckley ’76

Brian L. Buckley ’76—a lawyer, baker, and world traveler—died at 68 on January 21. He was born September 6, 1954, in New Orleans to Elliot and Mary Buckley. In New Orleans he graduated in 1972 from Isidore Newman High School, where he was sophomore class president and a member of the basketball, swimming, and track teams. He graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth, obtained a law degree from the College of William & Mary in 1979, and then practiced law at Gordon & Silber in New York City. He later became a partner at the Los Angeles firm of Gansinger, Hinshaw, Buckley & Schauer. He traveled widely, including Europe, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Far East and Pacific Islands, an African safari, and the Seychelles. After retirement he moved to Highlands, North Carolina, where he opened a highly successful bakery and deli, Bake My Day, known for its doughnuts and custard creampuffs. He had a knack for making lifelong friends, possessed a superb and witty sense of humor, took stabs at poetry, was well-read in literature and current affairs, and wrote letters to the editor. He ran the New York Marathon; loved children, cats, and vocabulary; and enjoyed discussing Bible chapters with his brothers. His 1983 marriage to Barbara Vande Wiele ended in divorce. His companion, Adell Jones, predeceased him in 2020. Survivors include siblings E. Ross, Margaret, John, and Michael and their families.
