Walter C. “Cliff” Barney Jr. ’51

Walter C. “Cliff” Barney Jr. ’51 died January 9 in Santa Cruz, California. Cliff led a rich and varied life with a special focus on journalism, an interest he developed during his years at Dartmouth as a senior editor of The Daily Dartmouth and the Dartmouth Quarterly. He went on to positions on the copy desk of The Philadelphia Inquirer, as copyeditor and reporter for Stars and Stripes in Germany, and as San Francisco bureau manager for Electronics Magazine. He was a cofounder, vice president, and editorial designer for Bioworld, an online news service; news editor for Macintosh Today; and managing editor and columnist for New Media Magazine. Another major interest was in counseling. He earned a master’s in the field at California State College and performed Gestalt therapy at the San Francisco Gestalt Institute. Along the way he helped run a California hot springs resort. Cliff, a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa, was delighted to renew his ties to Dartmouth and the class when he made his first-ever return to campus for his 70th reunion in 2021.
