William M. Bonnell ’63

William M. Bonnell ’63 died on December 12, 2022, in Shoreline, Washington, of cancer. Bill was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and graduated from La Jolla High School in California, where he was student body president and participated in six sports. He was an avid runner and participated in many marathons and half marathons and scored well in age group placings into his 70s. At Dartmouth Bill majored in art history (he was an active amateur painter for the rest of his life) and was a brother in Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Bill was president of his regional club and an Alumni Fund volunteer. In 1963 he took the LSAT on a whim at the University of Oklahoma, which led to a J.D. in 1966 at the University of Oklahoma. Bill had a long and successful career as an attorney and briefly working for the city attorney’s office in Oklahoma City and a local law firm, followed by the Oklahoma attorney general’s office. He then spent several years as the city attorney in Norman, Oklahoma. He and his family moved to San Anselmo, California, in 1974 and Bill joined the city attorney’s office in Richmond, California, eventually rising to become senior assistant city attorney. He retired in 2002, made a solo trip around the world, and married Susan, his second wife, who survives him. He is also survived by his first wife, Cathy, their daughter, and a grandson.
