Dennis Kaufman ’66

Dennis Kaufman ’66 passed away on September 22, 2022, in Norwich, Vermont, the town he and wife Sue loved and lived in for the past 51 years. His father was a ’35 and Dennis was never very far from Hanover. At Dartmouth he majored in engineering, enjoyed studio sculpture, and was a member of Pi Lambda Phi and the track team. After College there were stints in the planning office at Harvard and the Navy in Washington, D.C., before settling in Norwich. Dennis began designing houses and manufacturing structural components to build homes and commercial buildings. Dennis retired from the construction business in 2010. Along the way he built and rebuilt (after a chimney fire) his own home, adding an indoor swimming pool that provided heat for the whole house. He was a sculptor, carving stone and wood and assembling larger pieces from found materials. Dennis was appointed and then elected tax assessor in Norwich and in 2015 became treasurer of the Dartmouth Club of the Upper Valley, two service positions he enjoyed. Sue, children Stephanie and George, two of his five grandchildren, and an overflow crowd of neighbors and friends attended a service for Dennis in Hanover on September 25, 2022. Dennis was a Norwich town establishment as well as a Dartmouth graduate. There were laughter and tears in remembering Dennis. Among classmates in attendance were Richard Blacklow, George Blumenthal, Hector Motroni and Chuck Sherman. Contributions in Dennis’ memory may be made to the George Margulis 1935 Memorial Scholarship Fund at Dartmouth.
