John M. Morris ’11

John M. Morris ’11 ended his life in early August after struggling with bipolar disorder for many years. “Mac” was a singular talent with abundant wit, charisma, soulfulness, intellectual curiosity, and musical brilliance. He is survived by his wife, Jenny, son Billy, sister Lucy, and parents Kate and Hans. His grandfather, John M. Morris ’53, died the same week at age 91. Mac graduated Dartmouth with a degree in English and music and was a member of the Dartmouth Aires. Mac was a poet and librettist. Last year he completed his M.F.A. in opera making and writing at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where his opera, The Watchmaker’s Daughter, was performed in July 2021. He was planning to begin a master’s in music at the Frost School at the University of Miami and eventually pursue a Ph.D. in historic musicology. Mac loved skiing, sailing, tennis, and hunting with dogs Harry and Jake. He resisted social media and carried a notebook and pen at all times. He had memorized entire operas and could burst into song or recite a poem at the drop of a hat. He had the most infectious laugh, was a magnificent dancer, and could play anything on the piano. He would go deep with friends on all subjects. He loved tossing Billy in the air, teaching him music, and creating elaborate stories with full sound effects. There will be a memorial service on November 5 in N.Y.C.
