Edgar R. Miller Jr. ’51

Edgar R. Miller Jr. ’51, a surgeon whose volunteer doctoring took him to Vietnam, Bhutan, Nepal, and a Navajo reservation in New Mexico, died at his farm in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, on February 19. “Tyke” got his medical training at Dartmouth and Harvard. After an internship and residency at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, and a two-year tour of duty in the U.S. Navy aboard a destroyer escort in Antarctica, he settled in Wilmington, Delaware. He became chief of surgery at the Delaware Medical Center. He served as president of the Delaware Academy of Medicine and the Medical Association of Delaware. He was a surgical consultant to the A.I. DuPont Institute and the Veterans Administration Hospital. His practice was in general and vascular surgery. As a junior high school student he identified six career and life goals: surgeon, husband, farm owner, father to five children, naval service, and world travel. Tyke went six for six. His farm in Kennett Square was a special joy in his busy life. He was no gentleman farmer; he found delight in baling hay and delivering calves. He and wife Jane, who predeceased him, also enjoyed a second home in Lyndonville, Vermont. At Dartmouth Tyke was a member of Delta Tau Delta, the rowing team, and a tight-knit group of Dartmouth Medical School students who maintained close ties since graduation. As an alumnus he served as a member of the class executive committee.
