Arthur (Arthur) Bartlett Needham ’60

Arthur (Arthur) Bartlett Needham ’60 died in UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester, on September 14, 2021, after an illness. He was born on January 31, 1938, to Anne Elizabeth Norcross Needham and Roger Gray Needham. Arthur graduated from Gardner (Massachusetts) High School and at Dartmouth was a member of Army ROTC, serving on the rifle team. He graduated with a major in geology and then earned a master’s in education at the University of Virginia. He began a career working as an exploration geologist in Virginia and transitioned to teaching mathematics in Virginia and Massachusetts. Arthur had such fond memories of being a Boy Scout at Camp Collier in Gardner that he volunteered his time as a scoutmaster in the 1970s. He retired from North Middlesex Regional High School in Massachusetts after many years. In addition to impacting students in his classroom, Arthur tutored many at Mount Wachusett Community College. Arthur enjoyed vegetable gardening, target shooting, walking country roads, and traveling the world with his wife. They enjoyed mineral collecting with the Westminster Mineral Club. He was active at Emanuel Lutheran Church of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, participated in the church’s move from the Upper Common to John Fitch Highway, and in recent years enjoyed the men’s breakfasts. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha; children Pamela and Peter; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
