Bruce M. Taylor ’57

Bruce M. Taylor ’57 of Greentown, Pennsylvania, died on September 18, 2021, at Allied Services Hospice in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Bruce graduated from North Plainfield (New Jersey) High School. At Dartmouth he majored in economics, served on the dormitory committee, and was a member of the Dartmouth Christian Union. He pledged to Phi Sigma Kappa and continued when the chapter went local as Phi Tau. After graduation and serving in the military service, he turned from economics to teaching, earning an M.A. in education from Columbia University in 1962 and a Ph.D. in history from Fordham University in 1972. Bruce first taught at New Rochelle (New York) High School for several years, then took a position at the University of Dayton in Ohio, where he spent more than 30 years. He was hired to teach Latin American history, and a dual appointment in the school of education sparked an interest in experimental education. That grew to include a self-directed learning program for students, counseling adults in a credit for life experience, teaching extension courses in a local prison, organizing summer workshops for teachers, and teaching courses in the United Kingdom. In retirement he moved to Greentown, a small village in the Poconos on Lake Wallenpaupack. There he was a member of historical societies and the Pike County Democrats. Bruce is survived by Mary Jean, his wife of 63 years; sons Chris and Steve; daughter Lynn; and granddaughters Valerie and Isabel.
