David L. Sandborg ’57

David L. Sandborg ’57 of Bend, Oregon, passed away on October 17, 2021. David graduated from Galesburg (Illinois) High School. He began at Dartmouth as premed, was accepted by Dartmouth Medical School, decided not to attend and switched to an English major. David was house manager of Sigma Nu, rowed crew, and belonged to the Dartmouth Outing Club. He went to Stanford University Law School and received his J.D. in 1960. He served in the U.S. Army. David began his career in California as administrative assistant to Sen. Frederick S. Farr, 1961-62, then as deputy district attorney in Monterey County, 1962-64. He then practiced law, mostly in litigation and mediation. He once said, “Although I never became a doctor, the science courses I took have always been valuable in my work as a trial lawyer.” He was made a partner of Bronson, Bronson, and McKinnon in San Francisco. David’s career took him to Asia, where he lived and worked as a law professor at the City University of Hong Kong School of Law in dispute resolution studies and as an international arbitrator. He lived and taught in mainland China, India, and Vietnam. He has been described as “a true scholar with a keen intellect and a love of learning who was always up for discussing world affairs.” His hobbies were sailing and skiing. Throughout his life he maintained a love for his hometown of Galesburg, Illinois. He is survived by daughters Caroline and Mercedes and four grandchildren.
