Robert L. Reis ’55

Robert L. Reis ’55, M.D., a pioneer in cardiac surgery, passed away on January 1, 2021, in Miami. He is survived by his wife, Barbara. Bob came to Dartmouth from Weequahic High School in Newark, New Jersey. He took a premed course of studies and earned his M.D. from George Washington University School of Medicine in 1958. He then completed a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in thoracic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Among Bob’s many accomplishments was the development of one of the first artificial heart valves, now on exhibit in the Smithsonian Institution. He also served on a nominating committee for the Nobel Prize.
