Jackson “Jack” Lovell Smith ’54

Jackson “Jack” Lovell Smith ’54 passed away on July 24, 2021, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born in Milwaukee and grew up in Winnetka, Illinois, where he graduated from New Trier High School in 1950. He followed his brother, Hueston, to Dartmouth, where Jack was a member of the Dartmouth Outing Club, Phi Kappa Psi, Air Force ROTC, and the track and cross-country teams. Upon graduation he served as a first lieutenant on a radar site in Galena, Alaska. When his tour of duty ended he ventured off to Tahiti, met a crew from the United States, and sailed the Pacific for a year. This wanderlust was responsible for many trips later in life to Europe, China, India, Russia, South America, and Africa. He landed in Hawaii, where he took a job with Dean Witter and was sent to San Francisco for training. There he earned a J.D. from the University of California Hastings College of the Law and met his future wife, Connie. Jack worked for a year in the San Francisco attorney general’s office and then started his own practice in Louisiana, Missouri. He moved his family, now including daughter Diana, to Colorado Springs, where he served in the Colorado Springs city attorney’s office for 18 years. He then became general counsel for Colorado Springs Memorial Hospital, retiring in 2001. He served the College as alumni interviewer and vice president of the local club. He is survived by Connie, his wife of 56 years; and daughter Diana.
