Thomas James McCarthy Jr. ’54

Thomas James McCarthy Jr. ’54 passed away in Westport, Connecticut, on August 29, 2021. Tom came to Dartmouth from Geneva (New York) High School, where he played golf and was active in band, orchestra, and dramatics. After graduation from Dartmouth he served in the U.S. Army in Berlin and then joined General Reinsurance Corp. During his noteworthy 40 years with the company, he traveled the world extensively, including in assignments in London and China. He kept a home in Westport, where he amassed a world-class collection of antique and modern paperweights, cultivated a spectacular rose garden, and played golf at Longshore Golf Club. He and his wife, Mary, were active in their church and volunteered to serve dinners once a month at the Gillespie Center for Homeless Men. Tom was an avid reader, a student of history who gladly shared his books and opinions with any who asked. He was known for his generosity and his willingness to lend a helping hand to the needy. Tom is survived by Mary; children Christine, Thomas, John (and wife Susan), Maggie, Michael (and wife Stacy, Paul (and wife Ann), and Stacey; and grandchildren Kathleen, Thomas, James, Crissy, Patrick, Jack, Danny, Siobhan, and Sean.
