Barry R. Spiegel ’51

Barry R. Spiegel ’51, a prominent attorney in Philadelphia and a lifelong lover of thoroughbred racing, died in Paoli, Pennsylvania, on August 12, 2021. His wife of 67 years, Elsa, survives him, along with three children and six grandchildren. Following graduation from Dartmouth, where he was a member of Pi Lambda Phi and the Outing Club, Barry earned a law degree at the University of Pennsylvania. He served for two years in counterintelligence in the U.S. Army. Barry began his career as in-house counsel at International Resistance Co., becoming its secretary and general counsel. He went on to serve in private practice as the managing partner of Schnader, Harrison, Segal, and Lewis. He retired in 1992. He was fascinated by every aspect of horse racing, from buying and selling to racing and breeding thoroughbreds. “Wherever I am,” he said, “there will be a track nearby.” Nothing excited Barry more than betting on his own horse, winning, then entering in the winner’s circle to collect the purse. Much of Barry’s retirement life was spent in a courageous battle with cancer. He reported that the battle had been won, or that at least “there has been a ceasefire, and I have learned the joy of smelling the flowers.” He retained his remarkable sense of humor, razor-sharp wit, and legal mind. In addition to family outings to the racetrack, he especially enjoyed relaxing at the family’s beach home at Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey.
