Leonard F. Smith ’51

Leonard F. Smith ’51, a longtime resident of Los Gatos, California, and a frequent contributor to his community, died suddenly on September 23, 2021. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ditty, as well as three children and five grandchildren. Len grew up in Exeter, New Hampshire, graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, and came to Dartmouth after a short stint as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and was active in the College radio station. He and Ditty lived in the Bay Area for almost 70 years. He ran his own insurance brokerage firm for many years. In retirement he and a partner started the Travel Store; he later switched to selling real estate. During those years he served as president of the Dartmouth Club of Northern California and of the Rotary Club of Los Gatos. He was a member of the board of the San Jose Junior Chamber of Commerce. Len’s many interests included photography, stamp collecting, skiing, and racquetball. He and his family loved spending leisure time at their idyllic vacation home in Norden, California, in the Sierras near the Sugar Bowl Ski Area.
