Edward Landau ’51

Edward Landau ’51, M.D., a Renaissance man, died at his home in Worcester, Massachusetts, on September 23, 2021. His death came just two weeks after he had attended his 70th reunion at Dartmouth. As an undergraduate he was a member of Pi Lambda Phi, the Marching Band, and the freshman ski team. He attended Dartmouth’s two-year medical school and completed his M.D. at Harvard. He served two years as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, stationed in Germany. Ed’s medical practice was in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He also taught these specialties as an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He retired from the practice of medicine in 1989, then reinvented himself as a self-employed landscape designer after completing a master’s from the Conway School of Landscape Design. Ed believed strongly that one must first be a well-rounded person and a responsible citizen before attempting to be a proficient physician. Among many examples of his curiosity and contributive lifestyle, Ed served on the Worcester schools committee and as a member of the Northborough appropriations committee. He was active in the Assumption College Worcester Institute for Senior Education and on the Worcester world affairs committee. He completed training in court mediation and worked as a mediator in the Worcester District Court. A champion of medical ethics, he devised and taught courses in the subject.
