Herbert Lincoln “Linc” Fenno ’51

Herbert Lincoln “Linc” Fenno ’51 died on September 26, 2021, at his home in Barefoot Bay, Florida. He is survived by his wife, Dency, four children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Family ties to Dartmouth included his father, Jesse (class of 1916), and brother, John ’48. Linc and his family loved their snowbird years in Florida, where their agenda included “boating, beach, and barbecue.” They also had deep roots in Maine, dating back to the purchase of a beloved summer home on Lake Cobbossee. The lure of Maine and the outdoors led them to leave New York City, where Linc had a 20-year career with the W.T. Grant Co., to pursue a series of smaller-scale ventures in the retail and restaurant businesses. The first of these was Aqualand, a small animal and amusement park in Bar Harbor. Management of Aqualand required a steep learning curve, from how to feed abandoned harbor seal pups to tranquilizing and transporting large animals, as when “Suzie the Moose was loose.” The High Seas, a restaurant, motel, and gift shop complex, was another venture. Finally, Linc and Dency opened the Cubby Hole, “a special gift shop full of whimsey and wizards,” which they ran for many years. Linc learned at an early age to ski, sail, and pilot a plane. Through the years his love of the outdoors became even stronger. At Dartmouth he was a member of Phi Delta Theta.
