Lawrence Newman ’52

Lawrence Newman ’52 died peacefully at home in Port Washington, New York, on July 22, surrounded by his family. Larry attended DeWitt Clinton High School, then Dartmouth, where he was a history major and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude. He studied at Yale Law School, where he was a member of The Yale Law Journal and the Order of the Coif. His profound love of learning—especially history, Jewish studies, and the Yiddish language—continued throughout his life. Larry practiced trusts and estates law for more than 60 years and was a partner at Kaye, Scholar, Fierman, Hays & Handler. He was a distinguished law professor at Columbia, Yale, Penn, and Pace. Larry served on numerous boards and worked tirelessly for the causes he supported, including a term as chairman of the board of the American Friends of Hebrew University. At Dartmouth he was an active alumnus and served on President Jim Freedman’s advisory committee in the 1980s. He was a devoted Yankees fan, a formidable chess player, and a pool shark. Most important in Larry’s life was the love he had for his wife of 67 years, Helaine. She survives him along with children Debbie, Danny, and Karen; grandchildren Alex, Jenny, Hannah, Emily, Rachel, Samantha, and Allison; great-grandchildren Jason and Jeremy; and best friend and brother-in-law Howard.
