Harry Leopold Wachen ’52

Harry Leopold Wachen ’52, M.D., passed away in Great Neck, New York, on May 26. Harry was born on February 25, 1930, in Karlsruhe, Germany, and in mid-1939, with his family, he emigrated first to London on the famed Kindertransport ship and then to the United States, via convoy ship, at the end of 1939. He graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in Queens, New York, before coming to Dartmouth. Harry’s degree as a chemistry-zoology major led him to a medical degree from the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University in 1957 and a lifelong career in New York specializing as an obsterics/gynecology doctor. He was associated with Beth Israel Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, Albert Einstein Hospital, and Long Island Jewish Forest Hills Hospital. Harry also served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1961 to 1963. In April 1963 Harry and Elizabeth Fishmen were married. He is survived by her and sons David ’87 and Mark ’89. Granddaughter Allison is a Dartmouth ’22. Harry was a proud and active alumnus both as a classmate and as a member of the Jewish community. He volunteered as a Dartmouth class agent and fundraiser for more than 30 years.
