Jens Christian Sorensen ’65

Jens Christian Sorensen ’65 passed away on March 5 in Emeryville, California. He came to Dartmouth from East Providence, Rhode Island. As an undergraduate he was an art history major, a member of Gamma Delt, and president of the Jacko. He went on to receive a Ph.D. in environmental planning from the University of California, Berkeley, and began a long career in coastal and marine management. Jens Sorensen and Associates, which he founded in 1969, provided consulting, research, study tours, and teaching on ocean policy and environmental planning around the world, including 61 countries. His domestic work centered on the California coast and Boston. He was also a founder and assistant editor of Coastal Management Journal for almost 30 years and was a visiting professor or lecturer at a number of American and Australian universities. In 1988 he was named a Fulbright fellow, and he worked with the Organization of American States on issues of coastal resources and environment. His final project, underway at the time of his death, was research for a major reference work: Integrated Coastal and Marine Management: The First Fifty Years. He is survived by his daughter, Elise.
